Jomsom Airport

Calf eating cardboard in the street in Jomsom.

Cow crossing the bridge (they have the right of way).
On our way from Jomsom (about 9000 ft.) to Muktinath (over 12,000 ft.)

Our airplane.

In the airport in Pokhara, catching our flight to Jomson. Security consists of going into a room and getting a brief pat down. Gents in one room, ladies in another.

A boy getting a skin graft on the back of his leg. He fell out of a tree.

The stone that was removed from a 30 y/o woman by a laparoscopic pyelolithotomy.
The first time that procedure has been done in Nepal.

The out house. You better have strong legs so you can squat the necessary length of time.

The buffalo and calf that Caleb and Blake lived above in the village.

A spider the size of your hand near the villiage.

Three Nights in the Village

Here are some more pictures from Nepal.

Monday, October 5, 2009

We are leaving for the rural village to work on the biogas converters. The traffic in Kathmandu in crazy. No traffic laws. One way streets but everyone goes both ways and horns honking constantly. Stray dogs all over, some just laying in the street dying, others appear to be hanging in the butcher shop. Kind of hard to eat meat now. Shops and vendors everywhere--very persistent.
Caleb Shane and Randy eating lunch overlooking a Buddhist Temple.
Body being burned. The ashes or whatever is left is then thrown into the river.
Letting the feet of the dead body, wrapped in yellow cloth, touch the river water before being burned.
Cutting a goat head in half
Street butcher---flies everywhere
Monkey at the Monkey Temple. A Hindu Temple where the dead are burned and then thrown into the river.

Jomsom Airport

This is one of the airports that we will be flying into in Nepal.

Our Itinerary

Only 11 days until we leave. Our trip starts with a 20 hour flight from Salt Lake to Singapore changing planes in Portland and Tokyo. We will spend Oct. 3rd in Singapore seeing the sights (and trying to avoid getting caned for spitting or other such indecencies). On Sunday the fourth we leave for our 7 hour flight to Kathmandu, Nepal--time difference in twelve hours and fifteen minutes from Utah in case you were thinking about giving us a call. We will spend the rest of the 4th and the 5th in Kathmandu at the Tibet Guest House and then leave for villages in the Lanjung District. There we will be staying with some of the villagers and work the 7th and 8th on biogas projects. The 9th involves a 8 hour bus ride (hopefully not one of the "chicken busses") to a rural Madi Health camp to work for a day or two.

On the 11th we move on to work at the hospital in Bhatapur until the 13th when we leave for Pokhara where we catch a early morning flight (the flights only go early in the morning because the winds up in the Himalayas make flying to dangerous later in the day) to Jomsom (elevation 9,186 ft.) where we start our two day Anepurna trek. We will be traveling just a small segment of the the Annapurna circuit staying at a tea house in Muktinath (elevation 12,170 ft.) the first night and a tea house back in Jomsom the next night. Early morning on Friday the 16th we start back to Kathmandu and will stay there that night. Saturday we hope to attend church at the branch in Kathmandu (Saturday is their religious day in Nepal so that is when they hold church services). Later that day we catch our flight to Singapore where we will spend the night and then Sunday morning we leave for our flights back to Salt Lake arriving in the afternoon that day (we gain 24 hours on the return trip).

I will post some pictures now of where we are going and then will update with pictures we take while there when it possible to get internet access.
